KEYNOTE SPEAKER ERIC HIPPLE

Eric Hipple is a former NFL quarterback whose decade-long career with the Detroit Lions made him a fan favorite and team leader. A Utah State Hall of Famer, Hipple set a college record, throwing for over 6,000 yards and 34 touchdowns before the Lions drafted him in 1980. With Detroit, Hipple led his team to two playoff appearances and a divisional championship, earning 1981 Lions Most Valuable Player and securing a spot among the franchise’s top five all-time passers.

But Hipple’s story didn’t end on the field. In the face of profound personal tragedy—after losing his 15-year-old son Jeff to suicide in 2000—Hipple transformed his grief into a powerful mission: to break the silence and stigma around mental health. He became a nationally recognized advocate, keynote speaker, and educator, delivering mental fitness training to corporations, the military, law enforcement, schools, and communities worldwide. His message of hope, resilience, and action has inspired thousands.

Hipple’s impact has earned widespread recognition, including the University of Michigan’s Neubacher Award, the Detroit Lions Courage House Award, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Lifesaver Achievement Award. He has co-authored pioneering research on depression among retired athletes and authored the acclaimed book, “Real Men Do Cry,” which received a Presidential Award.

A tireless champion of a more inclusive and intersectional approach to mental health, Hipple currently serves as an ambassador for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, consults for the Mental Health Foundation of Western Michigan, and serves as a board officer for VetLife Foundation. His journey from NFL quarterback to mental health advocate shows the power of turning adversity into hope and lasting change.
