So Long Fruit Cake, Hello King Cake!
Join Galveston Island Humane Society for our 27th annual Krewe of Barkus & Meoux parade on Sunday, February 15th. Stemming from a desire for families and their pets to have an opportunity to be involved in the Mardi Gras Galveston festivities, the Galveston Island Humane Society created the Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade in 1988. This crowd-pleasing event has been going strong ever since! Proceeds from this walk will support our shelter pet care and enrichment work along with our community advocacy programs.
Leading the parade each year is the "Elite Pet" - a title awarded at the annual Paws Gala, which is held each September. This year we have two winners, Georgia and Dolly, supported by their loving mom Lindsey Serrette.
You may see many pet types, from dogs and cats, to horses, bunnies, ferrets, lizards, and more.
Registration is "per pet" and they may bring their favorite people! Pre-registration deadline is February 11, 2026. The fee is $20 and includes the official parade t- shirt. Shirts are not guaranteed for late or on-site registrations.
Things to Remember
Pets must be current on ALL vaccinations. A current rabies certificate must be presented upon request for all pets (not just tags). Vaccine records can be emailed to info@galvestonhumane.org (preferred) or presented in person at time of check-in. Pets walking must be on leash, no longer than 6 feet. No retractable leashes--no exceptions. Control must be maintained at all times.
Beads: Beads will not be provided for the parade and are not required. If you choose to throw beads, remember this is a long parade so you will need lots of beads. Plan a way to carry and distribute them that will be safe for you and your pets. No candy allowed to be thrown; candy may be dangerous to pets if swallowed!
Rescue Organizations
In the spirit of Mardi Gras, GIHS invites any organized animal rescue organization (501c3) to participate in our parade. This has proven to be a fun venue to get the word out that there are many wonderful pets who need homes while having a good time. A lead representative of the group should contact the shelter to make arrangements. The fee, per group, will be a minimum donation of $30 and will not include a t-shirt. Any shirts that are to be purchased should be ordered in advance if possible. Your group can be recognized as a parade sponsor with levels starting at only $100. The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade will take place Sunday, February 15th, 2026. Pre-Registration check-in, and on-site registration ($30) will begin at 12PM on 21st and Harborside, Pier 21.
Note: You may register on-line through February 12th for $20.
Lineup will be along the harbor to 20th St. At 1:30PM the parade will proceed down 20th St, turn right onto The Strand, walk west to 25th St. and turn left. They will turn left again onto Mechanic, travel east back to 20th St, across Harborside and disperse. There will be water for pets and humans at the end of the parade. Consider the weather and bring additional water for your pet. Bring bags to clean up after your pet if needed.
Note: The Krewe continues to present the Cat's Eye View Balcony Party, which grows bigger and better each year. This party offers you prime viewing of the three family fun parades held that day along with other activities. Event sponsors, walkers, guests, and donors will all help us produce a successful celebration that will help so many animals.
