The Charitable Foundation of the Islands Board of Directors Presents
Spirit of Generosity Co-Chairs Sam Boren and Steve King
Celebrate National Philanthropy Day with our island communities at the Generosity Breakfast 2026.
Join us for CFI’s annual celebration of generosity, featuring keynote speaker Lynne Wester, the 2026 Generosity Champion Awards, inspiring stories of impact from our 2026 Community Impact Fund grantees, and an invitation to help shape the future of Sanibel and Captiva by sharing emerging community needs and investing in solutions through the Community Impact Fund.
It’s easy to feel like a single act of kindness doesn’t add up to much in a world that keeps score in millions. This morning, Lynne Wester makes the case that it always has.
A community isn’t built by the few—it’s built one person, one gesture, one moment of caring at a time. And every single one of those moments counts more than the person giving it usually realizes.
Through stories of quiet generosity that changed everything for someone, somewhere, Lynne invites each of us to see our own place in that story—and the impact we can have on the community around us.
You are not too small to matter. You never were.

In the true spirit of generosity, Sam Boren and Steve King, our 2026 Spirit of Generosity Champions, are underwriting the Generosity Breakfast, allowing all event proceeds to directly benefit CFI’s Community Impact Fund.
Children on playgrounds around the world climb structures shaped by Steve's design work at Landscape Structures, Inc., the company he founded and grew into an internationally recognized name in play design.
This same care for people shows up in every gift Sam and Steve give. At Iowa State University, they created the Steven King and Sam Boren Endowed Dean's Chair in Design, shaping how the next generation of designers learns to build for community and connection. On Sanibel and Captiva, their generosity can be seen throughout our community—from the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s work protecting our natural environment, to Community Housing & Resources’ efforts to keep neighbors housed, to CFI’s work connecting people with the causes they care about most.
Sam brings decades of leadership experience from her career as a partner with Spencer Stuart, and she now serves on CFI's Board of Directors, helping guide how our island cares for itself. Sam and Steve also direct grants through CFI to causes they care about, and they back the loan program that helps local entrepreneurs open their doors and grow, because they know a strong island needs thriving small businesses as much as it needs strong nonprofits.
By hosting the 2026 Generosity Breakfast, Sam and Steve are turning the spotlight toward other neighbors whose generosity shapes this community. Every dollar from ticket and table sales will go straight into CFI's Community Impact Fund, ready the moment a family here needs help.
