We invite the community to an engaging evening with Maggie Lou Rader, playwright of Blood to Drink, for a special Community Conversation hosted by Emily Wells, Artistic Director of The Human Race Theatre Company. This intimate discussion will give audiences an opportunity to hear directly from Rader about the inspiration, creative process, and ideas behind this powerful and timely work.
Set in Salem, Massachusetts, during the infamous witch trials, Blood to Drink follows Elizabeth Proctor, Sarah Good, Bridget Bishop, and Ann Foster as they navigate accusation, judgment, survival, grief, and their complicated relationships with one another. Described by Rader as a “dark comedy,” the play explores internalized misogyny and patriarchal oppression while asking audiences to consider why the story of the Salem witch trials feel relevant today.
During the conversation, Rader and Wells will explore the women at the center of the story, the balance of humor and heartbreak within the play, and the contemporary questions hiding beneath its historical setting. Rader describes Salem as “1692–1693, but let’s be real… now. It’s now,” inviting audiences to look beyond history and consider the ways these themes continue to show up in our world.
