Who We Are
Founded in Whatcom County in 2012, Growing Veterans’ mission is to empower military veterans to grow food, communities, and each other.
Leadership Skagit is a program that strengthens and transforms our community by developing a network of business of community leaders. Our Leadership Skagit Team, the Blue Diamonds, is partnering with Growing Veterans on a project that will provide a lasting benefit to veterans in our community that are transitioning back to civilian life.
“At Growing Veterans we’re not just farming or helping vets, we’re trying to create a new paradigm in how people understand military veterans and their local food systems simultaneously,” said Executive Director Chris Brown.
The Growing Veterans Farms (located in Whatcom, Skagit, and King County) are a place that is working to end veteran isolation. At these farms veterans come together in an information peer-supporting setting to heal through dirt therapy, use skills that they gained in the military or school to support the broader community, and strengthen their resumes.
The Project
Their Skagit Farm on Starbird Road currently does not have the capacity to grow "starts" as it is lacking a greenhouse. (They grow them in Whatcom County and transport them down south). Our project goal is to “Raise the Roof” of a Greenhouse on their farm so that they can extend their growing season and provide a place for veterans of al abilities to heal, build community, and grow delicious food.
