Ape-ology - In the Field - Ape-stract Art

Registration is sold out

About This Event

Experience a splash of color and creativity at the Center for Great Apes at our Ape-ology: In the Field session, Ape-stract Art!

Dive into the fascinating world of ape painting—one of many optional enrichment activities that encourage natural curiosity, exploration, and self-expression through texture and movement. While these activities may look artistic to us, for the apes they’re an engaging sensory experience that supports choice, exploration of new materials, and positive interactions with their caregivers.

Please note: not all apes enjoy painting, and that’s perfectly okay! During this special Ape-ology session, we’ll be visiting with a few individuals who do like to get creative. As always, the apes have complete choice in their participation. If one of our orangutans or chimpanzees decides they’d rather not paint during the event, we’ll simply move along and visit others who may be interested at that time.

What makes this particular Ape-ology: In the Field unique is its expanded format:
✨ A longer, more in-depth tour of the sanctuary
✨ Extended time with our apes and caregivers at two orangutan areas and two chimpanzee areas
✨ The rare chance to observe painting enrichment in real time—only if the apes choose to participate
✨ An opportunity to purchase one of the four paintings created during the experience once the session concludes

Participants will have the opportunity to:
🎨 Observe orangutans and chimpanzees as they paint (if they choose to engage!)
🎨 Hear from caregivers about how painting enriches each individual’s daily life
🎨 Learn about the materials and methods used to ensure the apes’ safety, comfort, and choice in every session

This session highlights how enrichment supports both mental stimulation and emotional well-being while giving participants a colorful, meaningful glimpse into sanctuary life.

Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to see enrichment in action and possibly bring home a piece of ape-made art!

Minimum Age: 15 years
Limited to: 20 participants
