Our mission is to foster inclusion, interdependence, and genuine connection between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities by crafting original, transformative adventures for a neurodiverse band of travelers.
We reject the assumption that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are limited in their capacity to enjoy the full human experience. We are creating a world where everybody matters, differences enrich, and opportunities are boundless. Our dream is to model our vision of inclusion everywhere we travel, fundamentally altering the way people experience difference. #EverybodyIn!
"The way the staff spoke to each other, to the band members, and about the band members modeled a kind of radical sharing of love, emotion, encouragement, and truth that I needed. The world should communicate the way Roadies do." - Emily, Artist-in-Residence
"Traveling with the Wayfaring Band is a blast. We explore cities and friendships and food and just have fun together. I love the Band!" - Ryan, Band Member
"[Because of the Band,] I think my perception of inclusion hasn't changed as much as it has broadened. As someone who has multiple marginalized identities, inclusion has always been something I was cognizant of. Because people can include you, but that doesn't make you feel like you belong. I think inclusion is a step towards belonging. Creating spaces and celebrating people to be fully and authentically themselves. Accepting people for where they're at but also holding each other accountable. Having uncomfortable conversations because we care for each other. Recognizing and respecting our own needs and one another's. These are all ways to help people feel safe and cared for. To me, inclusion is inviting someone over to your house, but belonging is making them feel like it's home. Which I think that TWB is truly about--belonging." Helen, Artist-in-Residence
"The Wayfaring Band is one of the most important organizations I have been a part of in my life. From my first trip as an Artist-in-Residence to my next trip as a Roadie, I have learned and continue to learn so much each and every moment of the experience. The knowledge and personal experience that I have gained from the travels and the people we travel alongside are incomparable to any education I have received. Their hands-on, jump head first, we got this, all together now mentality is something I value, cherish, and always strive to integrate more of into my daily life after the trips." - Claire, Roadie
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity for this amazing experience. It was somehow the easiest and hardest thing I've done. Living in everyday neurotypical society doesn't allow you to hold the space for empathy, compassion, and understanding anywhere near as this trip did. This trip was leaps and bounds better than any yoga or meditation retreat I've ever done. This trip left me undone but gave me a glimmer of what it means to live wholly. I was allowed and encouraged to be my full self, with my full range of emotions, both negative and positive, and had to accept that of others. It was a life-changing experience." - Amy, Leadership Fellow
