Protest and Progress: Celebrating Black History Through Advocacy and Courage

Protest! Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, protest – in one form or another – is as American as apple pie. No philosophy, ideology, culture, or cause has a monopoly on it. Sometimes loud, sometimes silent, sometimes large, other times single acts of courage, protest has shaped America. It has been applied in more instances throughout American history than many would credit. Indeed, it is a fundamental strategy in the American toolbox as we work to build a more perfect union.

Please join the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession (“IILP”) as we celebrate Black History Month with a presentation by Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, Professor of Constitutional Law and Africana Studies at John Jay College (CUNY) about her book, A Protest History of the United States. Then, we’ll dig deeper during a fireside chat between Professor Browne-Marshall and Pamela Meanes, a former President of the National Bar Association, and Monica Dula, a former Chair of the National Bar Association’s Women Lawyers Division, discussing protest in the context of Black History and its implications for African Americans, especially Black women.
