Hispanics in the Legal Profession

John Trasviña has seen a lot. His is a career that has mattered. And, he’s continuing to make a difference.

While the legal profession has been the beneficiary of many leaders from the Hispanic community – leading law firms, corporate law departments, government agencies, bar associations, and civic and community organizations – as a leader, John stands out for the depth and breadth of his work and the influence it has and continues to have. From his work as Staff Director and General Counsel with the US Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, to his service leading the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund (“MALDEF”), to his work as President Obama’s HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity, to Dean of the University of San Francisco School of Law, to his work in the Biden Administration as a as a principal legal advisor at the US Department of Homeland Security, and now as the President of the San Francisco Board of Appeals, John has had seats at numerous tables and been in positions to watch and influence important matters of law, policy, and social justice. Indeed, he’s been particularly effective and impactful in leadership roles that span a multitude of settings yet with each having a clear vision for the future of the community.
