History and Home Arts Workshop Series: Making a Penny Rug: Inspired from rugs 1840 – Present

A Penny Rug is a decorative floor or table covering made from wool clothing or wool blanket scraps. The idea of a Penny Rug appears about 1840 and grew in popularity in the last quarter of the 19th century. They are identified by stacked circles and what is known as "tongues," incorporating embroidery and sometimes, wool applique. They range from small table toppers for candles or lamps to very large pieces that fit the entrance to a parlor, or the long tables of large families. On September 1, historical stories will be shared as participants examine actual 19th century and early 20th century antique rugs.

Following the historic presentation, participants can return for the next four Tuesdays for a workshop to design and make their own Penny Rug. All materials will be provided. Workshop participants should also bring shears and a pencil with an eraser. It is preferred to register with the history center, but if you decide to attend last minute, all are welcome. Thanks to the support of the Athens County Foundation, all classes are free to attend and supplies are provided!
