"CARF (CDKN2AIP) Against Metabolic Dysfunction: From Insulin Resistance to Fatty Liver"

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Kamrul M. Hasan is a faculty investigator at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, where he joined the School of Medicine (Division of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine) in 2015–2016. He earned a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Microbiology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology from the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Tokyo. Following his Ph.D., he completed STA/NEDO postdoctoral training at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) before moving to the City of Hope Beckman Research Institute (2009–2014) as a visiting/staff scientist. Dr. Hasan was among the first to identify and mechanistically characterize CARF (CDKN2AIP) as a p53-interacting regulator, defining a novel node in the ARF–MDM2–p53 tumor suppressor network and linking CARF to transcriptional and RNA-processing control. His laboratory now investigates CARF as a regulator of metabolic dysfunction, with emphasis on insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis/MASLD and progression to NASH. Ongoing projects dissect CARF-dependent regulation of the FOXA2–CPT2 fatty-acid oxidation axis and its integration with nicotine- and diet-induced lipolysis, ER stress, and steatotic remodeling in hepatocyte and mouse models. He also studies CARF-mediated pathways in cancer metabolism, including therapy-induced neuroendocrine differentiation in prostate cancer. Dr. Hasan’s research has been supported by NIH programs (including NIGMS SC2 and SuRE R16 awards), and he has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and a book chapter, while mentoring trainees from high school through postdoctoral levels.
