About This Event
Sunday, July 26, 1-3pm
Free, but registration required
Suggested donation: $18/person
Location: Beth Olem Cemetery, inside GM Factory ZERO
Join us for a rare and meaningful opportunity. Congregation Shaarey Zedek's first cemetery, Beth Olem, was established in Detroit in the 1860s and contains about 1100 graves. Thanks to industrial encroachment, in the 1980s, the cemetery was subsumed into what is now GM Factory ZERO. A unique relationship between the plant, Shaarey Zedek, and Clover Hill Park Cemetery (which manages Beth Olem) has developed to allow the Jewish community to access the cemetery twice per year (the Sunday before Rosh Hashanah, and the Sunday before Passover)--and occasionally for special events.
Join our deeply knowledgeable docents for a very special walk and "open house" at this old-world cemetery. Tours run continuously (departing every 20 minutes). This program is a companion event to a screening of Only Twice a Year, a documentary about Beth Olem that is part of the J's Detroit Jewish Film Festival: Summer Edition. Register here to attend the film on Tuesday, July 21. Then, register below to join us on Sunday, July 26 for the cemetery walk.
Please note: Directions and information about accessing the plant will be emailed to registrants in advance. Only registered attendees will be allowed into GM Factory ZERO. All participants are required to go through plant security before entering Beth Olem. Water for handwashing will be available. No public restrooms.
