WHAT IS A SOUL RETRIEVAL?
Soul retrieving is an ancient practice of the Mayan Tz’utujil people. They believe that when a traumatic event occurs, such as a car accident, sexual abuse, or any experience of profound shock, it can create a disconnection between a person and their soul. In this tradition, the soul is understood to remain at the location where the trauma took place.
When we go through difficult or deeply shocking experiences, such as an accident, abuse, or trauma from childhood or from more recent events, a separation can occur within us. In Western terms, people might often think of this as a mental disconnect, because there is sometimes a disassociation from the memory and the pain. But indigenous peoples understand that this fragmentation goes beyond the mind. It is also spiritual and energetic.
Across many indigenous traditions, it is taught that a part of our spirit separates from us and parts of our spirit get dispersed in places where we experienced trauma or pain. Different indigenous cultures carry their own practices for reconnecting the spirit back to the body. This Soul Reconnection ceremony is the Mayan way.
What are some signs that a person may be experiencing a disconnection?
People may feel a persistent lack of energy or deep fatigue. They may struggle with depression, motivation, or find themselves frequently ill without doctors ever being able to identify a clear cause. These can all be signs of a spiritual imbalance rather than a purely physical one. When Western medicine cannot tell you what is wrong, it may be because it does not account for your deeper emotional or spiritual state.
When the site of the incident is accessible, the soul retrieval specialist goes there in person and calls the spirit back into the body. When traveling to the location is not possible, the specialist makes the journey energetically, connecting to the scene from a distance and requesting that the spirit return to you. This practice is recommended to help restore alignment, not only within yourself but with the cosmos as a whole.
WHAT TO EXPECT
In this Soul Retrieval circle, we will begin with a brief talk about what soul retrieval is, and then we will gather in sacred silence while Nana Marina and Soul Retrieval specialist Magdalena work with ancient energies to reconnect your spirit back to your body. They will move through the circle working with each person individually.
HOUSE RULES
Please use the restroom before the ceremony begins, as once the circle opens you will not be able to leave. It is critical no one leaves during the ceremony!
Out of respect for the elders and the sacred nature of this work, all recording (audio and visual) is strictly prohibited. We ask that you honor this request with mindfulness and care.
AFTER SESSION CARE
After receiving a soul retrieval it is recommended that you relax and go to sleep as soon as you can. Drink a glass of water and head to bed. Try not to overthink the experience, we know that is easier said than done. The best thing you can do is simply rest.
In the days that follow, you may feel aches in random places. These are the spots where the Elder called your spirit back to you, and that can show up physically in the body.
You may also feel sick or hungover, this is completely normal. If your spirit has been disconnected for a long time, it takes a few days to settle back into the body.
High emotions can also be expected. Anxiety, depression, deep happiness, or even euphoria have all been reported by people who have received a soul retrieval. All of it is part of the process. We each process the experience differently.
The body is sensitive, so it takes time for it to adjust. Observe whatever emotions arise and let them flow through you like rainfall, trust the process.
We recommend taking slow and easy days after having a soul retrieval when possible. Give your body the time and space to reconnect with your soul. In some cases, they may have been apart for years, so please be kind to yourself.
This event is donation-based on a sliding scale in efforts to ensure accessibility while simultaneously providing financial reciprocity to our beloved elders.
Formal address provided in event registration receipt email.
**Please check your inbox (or spam) for the receipt, that will include detailed preparation info. It always arrives, though sometimes, it can be tricky to find!
