About This Event
The first in this year's InsiderOutsider series in collaboration with Ma's House introduces Ursala Hudson (Kadusné) with a brief conversation with the artist followed by a hands-on workshop that explores the idea of “weaving relationships”, with a focus on process versus product, and material interaction versus illustration. Participants will be invited to listen and respond to the material to notice points of interconnection, tension, and balance through experimental play. Compositions will be built by noticing weight, rhythm, interruption, and harmony. Participants form all experiences and backgrounds welcome, teen through adult.
Ursala Hudson (Kadusné) is an interdisciplinary artist of German, English, Filipino, and Alaska Native (Tlingit) descent. Through weaving, painting, and collage, she engages Indigenous feminisms and Native spirituality to address colonialism, institutional reform, and cultural rematriation. Raised in a family of artists, she developed an expansive creative practice early on and holds an MFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her work has been exhibited and collected by institutions including The Newark Museum of Art, the Venice Biennale, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Hudson is a May artist-in-residence at Ma’s House and will present work in the forthcoming exhibition Motherland: Visions of Home & Belonging, opening May 30 on the Shinnecock Reservation.
InsiderOutsider: New Voices in the Art World is a dynamic series spotlighting underrepresented artists who challenge convention, expand the boundaries of contemporary art, and invite deeper dialogue. It is presented in collaboration with Jeremy Dennis and the artists-in-residence of Ma’s House, a center for Indigenous and BIPOC artists. Together, we explore the creative practices and personal narratives shaping today’s evolving art landscape through conversation and hands-on creativity.
Made possible with public funding provided by Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, with the support of County Legislator Ann Welker, and by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Additional funding for this program comes from Vital Projects Fund.
