InsiderOutsider: Darlene Deloris

In this third InsiderOutsider program, we introduce historian, curator, and multi-disciplinary artist Darlene Deloris to discuss her work and guide a creative workshop on constructing and maintaining Infinity Accordion Books. Informed in her own work, Darlene will demonstrate how these types of books can be used to map creative ideas or be an avenue for creative archiving. She will guide you to construct the basics of an accordion book and you will learn different techniques to make this personalized book last a lifetime.

What begins with the simple zigzag/ accordion fold in books that are basic, versatile, and perfect for any age, can become very layered and elaborate. Flaps and extensions can be added to build in different directions and there is potential for it to be 3D and hold outside materials by adding pockets/ envelopes. You can use accordion books to capture, visualize, build, and reflect on practices, indefinitely. Their infinite nature can be utilized as a mental networking map on thinking, organizing, and archiving. They are ideal if you're interested in journaling and/or sketching but wish you had more pages in your books; if you have a project in mind but are unsure where to begin, or perhaps you're looking for a way to organize material that you are collecting and archiving. This experience is appropriate for all ages.

Brooklyn-based historian and multi-disciplinary artist Darlene Deloris received her B.A in Historical Studies from SUNY Empire State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Darlene is a self-taught artist using ethnographic research and a variety of mediums, texture, colors, and symbols to create portraits that give voice to the communities who are constantly transposing between a state of angst and of regality. She has had artwork featured in numerous exhibitions, including artwork selected by SaveArtSpace and displayed on a billboard in Brooklyn, NY (2021) and winner of the international portrait competition created by SUNY and Governor Hochul to honor Dr. Hazel N. Dukes(2024). Darlene was featured in Hyperallergic(2024) for her studio process and was the 2025 Curatorial Fellow for AnkhLave Arts Alliance. She is currently the 2026 Lead Curator with Ankhlave Arts Alliance and 2026 Fine Arts Department Curator for DuYe Moves.

InsiderOutsider: New Voices in the Art World is a dynamic series spotlighting underrepresented artists who challenge convention, expand the boundaries of contemporary art, and invite deeper dialogue. It is presented in collaboration with Jeremy Dennis and the artists-in-residence of Ma’s House, a center for Indigenous and BIPOC artists. Together, we explore the creative practices and personal narratives shaping today’s evolving art landscape through conversation and hands-on creativity.
