Course Goals: Come read important works of the General Jewish Labor Bund in Yiddish! Popular interest in the history of the Bund has perhaps never been higher, and yet the vast majority of the Bund’s writings remain untranslated and spread among archives. This course will allow Yiddish students the chance to engage with the Bund’s ideas on matters of great relevance to today’s world as well as 100 years ago: belonging, nationalism, socialism, Jewishness, and the principles of doikayt (hereness).
This mini course will focus on Yiddish writings of the Bund in Poland (1918–1939) in its major press organ, the Folkstsaytung, with an emphasis on Bundism’s relationship with a rival political ideology: Zionism. Students will read and learn about the Bund’s large body of literature on Zionism and Anti-Zionism in the context of their socialist worldview. Students will be exposed to Bundist texts that are largely unknown today and share their impressions of the material in Yiddish.
Course Tools: All texts have been selected based on the instructor’s research and forthcoming book of translations, We, Traitors: Bundist Writings on Zionism, Palestine, and Socialism (Haymarket Press, 2027), co-edited with Nathan Tankus.
Additional Info: This course will be taught entirely in Yiddish. Appropriate for students of intermediate and advanced reading ability.
