A Taste of Israel: Yom HaAtzmaut Celebration & Yom HaZikaron Memorial
Thursday, April 23 at 6:00 PM at the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley
Join us for a meaningful and inspiring evening as our community commemorates Yom HaZikaron and celebrates Yom HaAtzmaut together—honoring memory, embracing connection, and savoring the rich flavors of Israel.
This year, we are delighted to welcome Chef Inon Carmel, visiting South Bend as part of the Partnership2Gether Western Galilee Chef Delegation. A resident of Kibbutz Kabri, Chef Inon represents generations of Galilean tradition. His culinary philosophy is rooted in the region’s farm‑to‑table heritage—highlighting seasonal ingredients, local agriculture, and the deep ties between land, food, and community.

Yom HaZikaron Memorial Ceremony
We will begin with a solemn remembrance of Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror, including candle lighting and brief reflections to honor their memory.

“A Taste of Israel” Dinner & Cooking Demonstration
Following the memorial, the evening transforms into celebration as dinner is served, and Chef Inon leads a live cooking demonstration. Experience the authentic flavors of the Galilee while learning how Israeli ingredients and food traditions tell the story of a people and a place.

Dinner will be tapas style (vegetarian dairy) and prepared under SBK, featuring: falafel, labaneh, couscous, vegetable stew, hummus, sabich, fattoush salad, 'chopped-liver' eggplant, spicy harissa-braised veggies, coconut nabali, & more

Conversation & Community Dialogue
The program concludes with an engaging conversation between Chef Inon and our community’s Israeli emissary, Omer Karavani, offering insights into life in northern Israel today, his personal story, and the power of food to bring people together.
You must register in advance. Price is $18 per person (ages 13 and older). Childcare is available.
