About This Event
Training Description:
This training is a summation of a literature review around best practices for ending therapeutic relationships with consumers. It includes the presentation of a model for wrap-up activities that synthesizes the most important pieces of termination as described in several theoretical perspectives (reflective theory, family theory, CBT, solution-focused, and narrative theory). In this training, we will discuss appropriate ways to plan for endings with consumers including timing (both with regards to bringing up the topic of ending and how long to spend on the process), goals for wrap-up following the review-resolve-prepare model, potential emotional reactions to ending by both consumers and clinicians, individual characteristics that may impact the process and reactions to ending, celebration ideas for last sessions, and some ethical questions that might come up during and after the ending process.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this training, clinicians will be able to:
- Broach the topic of ending comfortably with consumers
- Feel confident in their planning for ending with consumers
- Have a useful model to follow and questions to consider as they plan for endings
- Be able to anticipate how consumers may respond to ending
- Feel comfortable anticipating their own reactions to ending
- Have ideas for ways to celebrate the ending process

Presenters Bio:
Sheri Meland, MSW, SAC-IT, is a clinician in Outpatient Services. She holds an MS degree from UW Madison in sociology (focus on social psychology) from 2002 and an MSW from 2023. Additionally, she holds a SAC-IT and enjoys working with folks struggling with substance use. She has always been interested in the intersection between psychological processes and interpersonal interactions, focusing on how perception influences behavioral choices, which influence others’ perceptions, often creating a reinforcing loop that confirms perception and bias. When not thinking about psychological processes, she enjoys reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, walking her dogs, and hanging out with her family.
