You and a guest are invited to an evening of American history, storytelling, and conversation commemorating America’s 250th with author and historian Jonathan Earle. Earle will discuss his new book He Has the People: Abraham Lincoln and the Election of 1860. A book signing follows with books available to purchase.
Jonathan Earle is an historian specializing in the antebellum United States and is the author and editor of several acclaimed works, including Jacksonian Antislavery and the Politics of Free Soil, which won the 2005 Broussard First Book Prize from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR). His edited collection Bleeding Kansas, Bleeding Missouri: The Long Civil War on the Border was named a Notable Book by the State Library of Kansas.
Earle was a longtime faculty member in the History Department at the University of Kansas, where he also served as Director of the University Honors Program and Associate Director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, before moving to Louisiana State University in 2014, where he is dean of the Ogden Honors College.
Doors open at 6:15. Join Humanities Kansas and the Kansas State Historical Society for a History Happy Hour before the event! A cash bar will be available and two unique artifacts from the collection of the Kansas Museum of History with ties to the national stories featured in Earle's book will be on display for one night only!
The event is free, but seating is limited and registration is required.
