Course Details
One of the most fascinating aspects of 20th-century secular Yiddish song and poetry is that the majority of its creators came from traditional religious backgrounds. How was that background reflected in their songs and poems? Join eminent scholar and translator Professor Kathryn Hellerstein, along with renowned klezmer and Yiddish song performer and educator Cantor Jeff Warschauer, for an unprecedented deep dive into this wonderful topic! We will learn, sing and study beautiful and inspiring Yiddish songs and poems, and then discuss how frumkayt figures in the words of these lyricists and poets. Do we hear subversion, irony, nostalgia, comedy, sincerity, belief, or other tones? How do our readings of the texts inform our performance of them, whether in song or recitation? Translations will be provided. Everyone is welcome!
