Time for sleuthing! Play back to Raymond Chandler in La Jolla sleuthing alleys and cocktail lounges with legendary detective Phillip Marlowe. Discover the history and culture of historic buildings and architecture. Enjoy the art of chapels and churches.

Our tour will focus on scenarios the popular pulp fiction writer fictionalized in Playback, his 1959 novel set in La Jolla. The walk follows a route of Chandler’s film noir hero Phillip Marlowe as he solves a murder through disguised haunts ranging from La Valencia hotel to the remains of a Victorian house in Drury Lane; Chandler, living for a while on Camino de la Costa before moving to a home on Prospect Street, wrote the story as his last novel. The tour includes readings from Chandler’s stylized prose describing La Jolla and honors Chandler’s 134th birthday which would have been July 23.
