Larry F. Groth Sr. & Larry F. Groth Jr. Scholarship Fund

On behalf of the family and the Schoolcraft College Foundation, thank you for your thoughtful donation in memory of Larry F. Groth Sr. & Larry F. Groth Jr. for fire academy scholarships.

The fire service is built on generations of courage, commitment, and sacrifice. For the Groth family, that legacy wasn’t just a career—it was a calling passed from father to son.

Larry F. Groth, Sr. dedicated 40 years of his life to the fire service. He began his career with the City of Plymouth Fire Department before joining the Plymouth Township Fire Department, where he served with distinction as Fire Chief for over 20 years until his retirement in 2003. Larry Sr. lived and breathed his profession—he took pride in hiring graduates of the Schoolcraft College Fire Academy and mentoring young professionals who would go on to serve their communities with the same integrity he modeled. When he passed away on June 27, 2020, his lifelong dedication was honored in a fitting tribute: the 1936 Fire Wagon—traditionally reserved for line-of-duty deaths and department dignitaries—was used to carry him to his final resting place at Mount Hope Memorial Gardens.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Larry F. Groth, Jr. proudly continued a family tradition built on leadership, heart, and dedication. He served for 41 years in the fire service, beginning his career at Plymouth Township, where he had the honor of working alongside his father. He went on to dedicate 36 years to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport Fire Department, rising through the ranks to retire as Battalion Chief. Known for his leadership, resilience, and dedication, Larry Jr. left a lasting impact on those he mentored and served with. He passed away on July 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service that will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters.

To honor both of these remarkable men, their legacy of service, and their commitment to shaping the future of the fire service, their families have established the Larry F. Groth Sr. and Larry F. Groth Jr. (LFG) Scholarship Fund at Schoolcraft College’s Fire Academy. This fund will support and inspire future firefighters—those who carry the same sense of purpose, strength, and service as the men it honors.

The LFG Scholarship Fund is more than financial support—it’s a symbol of legacy, mentorship, and enduring dedication to duty. In tribute to two heroic men, their values will live on through the hands and hearts of the next generation.

Checks should be made out to the Schoolcraft College Foundation and mailed to 18600 Haggerty Rd, Livonia, MI 48152.  Please write "Larry F. Groth Scholarship " on the memo line.
