Michael Shepperd: "Antigravity in Music"

About This Event

What makes a phrase float? Why does one performance feel earthbound while another seems to suspend time altogether?

Drawing on the teachings and aphorisms of legendary pianist and teacher Leon Fleisher, pianist Michael Sheppard explores the idea that music is governed less by abstract mathematics than by the physical laws of motion, momentum, weight, balance, and release. Through live performance and discussion, this presentation investigates how great musicians create the sensation of levitation, inevitability, propulsion, and stillness — and how these principles shape everything from phrasing and rubato to tone production and large-scale musical architecture.

Part masterclass, part philosophical exploration, Antigravity in Music invites listeners to hear familiar repertoire through the lens of energy, motion, and embodied musical experience.
