Author Talk: Sex, Clubs, Dissent: Visualising Queer Nightlife with Amelia Abraham, Lola Flash, and Meryl Meisler

Writer and editor Amelia Abraham is joined by photographers Lola Flash and Meryl Meisler in celebration of the recently published survey book, Sex, Clubs, Dissent: Visualising Queer Nightlife, the first landmark publication charting the expansive visual history of queer nightlife through the lens of photographers, filmmakers, and artists.

Together, they will explore the visual cultures of queer nightlife, considering how photography and image-making have shaped spaces of pleasure, resistance, and community across generations. The conversation will trace the power and tension of documenting subcultures, at once preserving fleeting histories and exposing them to new forms of visibility. 

Featuring the work of Sunil Gupta, Del LaGrace Volcano, Wolfgang Tillmans, Wu Tsang, Reynaldo Rivera, Vaginal Davis, and many other artists, Sex, Clubs, Dissent asks what our decades-long quest to catalogue and understand nightlife spaces through photography and film can tell us about our various relationships with them, and how photography intersects with pleasure, politics, and protest.

Chairs with backs will be available. Located at 26 Wooster Street, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art strives to provide a welcoming environment to all visitors. Five external steps lead to our entrance doors: a wheelchair lift is available. All galleries are wheelchair-accessible, and a single-occupancy accessible restroom is located behind the visitor services desk: all restrooms are gender-neutral.
