About This Event
This mentorship based afterschool program invites teens to the farm to gather with peers interested in learning practical farming skills, being outdoors, growing, harvesting and sharing food together, and weaving in themes of self care, breathing, and mindfulness on the farm.
Summer Session Details
Who: Teens ages 12–17 (small group of 10-12 participants)
Dates: Fridays, June 12th, 19th, 26th, July 17th, 24th, 31st (6 sessions)
Time: 9:00 - 11:30 AM
Location: Light Root Farm, 7715 Arapahoe Road, Boulder, CO
Summer curriculum includes:
• Planting and cultivating vegetable crops
• Water and irrigation systems
• Harvesting and food processing
• Medicinal Herb growing and harvesting
• Calf care and leading
• Pasture grazing and fence set up for cows, pigs, chickens
• Cow milking and dairy arts
The farm comes alive in the summer, with full days marked by planting, harvesting, irrigation, and animals grazing across the fields. Teens will take part in the diverse rhythms of the season—learning new skills, working outdoors alongside peers and mentor farmers, and experiencing the rewards of their efforts through harvesting, processing, and cooking fresh food throughout June and July. Each session includes a light farm-fresh snack, and as the harvest season picks up teens will bring home some seasonal vegetables to share with their families.
More opportunities ahead:
Fall Teen Farmer Group sessions are planned as well, with sign-ups opening later this summer.
• Fall Session: tentatively Wednesdays, September 9 – October 28, 4:30–6:30 PM (8 sessions)
We look forward to welcoming teens to the farm for a season of learning, connection, and growth.
