Presented by Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust

10/18/2026 Spalding House Second Sundays ( )

About This Event

Did you know that the Spalding House was built circa 1760 and is Lowell’s third oldest home?

Visit this colonial museum during an open house to discover the history of the property and its unique connection with Pawtucket Falls and the Merrimack River.  You’ll learn how the relationship between people and the river has shifted over the years; from providing abundant fish to abundant hydro-power.

Explore this relationship, and more, as we open up the Spalding House for self-guided tours and family-friendly activities, usually the second Sunday of every month.

*Due to scheduling conflicts the next month (Oct) Spalding House Second Sundays will be held on the third Sunday instead of the usual date.*

Our Spalding House program in October

What does it take to turn a humble flax plant into something you can wear?

Join us for our Open House at the Spalding House on Sunday, October 18th, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM for a hands-on flax demonstration as we follow this remarkable fiber through its transformation—from plant to preparedflax, from fiber to thread, and ultimately from thread to cloth and clothing.

Long before we could not simply head to a store for our next spring/summer clothing. A lot of work and ingenuity went into
preparing our wardrobe. We began with growing, harvesting, processing, spinning, weaving, and sewing with flax. Let’s step back in
time and explore how our ancestors prepared for the seasons ahead—one flax stalk at a time.
