Without private education Lucy has no chance of survival in El Salvador. The public school systems are run by gangs. Boys are forced to join the gangs or suffer beatings as a result of their noncompliance. Girls can be pulled into the bathroom and raped at any point by the gang members and the teachers will simply turn and look the other way for fear of their own lives.  Even if the youth were to pay extortion money everyday for "protection," they still run a high risk attending the public school system. This is a risk the Mi Casa Organization is not willing to take. It is important that each Mi Casa Kid have a safe learning environment to further their education.
