This support group is a safe, judgment-free space where people who identify as Asian men can openly share their experiences, struggles, and victories in navigating life’s challenges. Through guided discussions, interactive exercises, and peer support, participants will explore healthy ways to express emotions, manage stress, and build stronger connections. This group encourages authenticity, resilience, and personal growth.

Duration: 8 sessions
Dates: Tuesday 
10/7, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 12/2
Time: 7-830pm ET / 4-530pm PT / 6-730pm CT

This group is right for you if:

  • You, or a personal support has helped you, identify a need for better understanding and regulation of your emotions.
  • You are ready and willing to challenge yourself to find new and healthier strategies to manage your emotions and engage in relationships.
  • You are looking for a space to learn and practice new skills in a curious and non-judgmental environment.
  • You are willing to commit to 8 consecutive weeks of group work with consideration and respect for those also participating in this support group (1.5 hours).

This group is not right for you if:

  • You are in a higher level of care or are being discharged from hospitalization/IOP/PHP, or are actively struggling with concerns around thoughts or behaviors of harming yourself or others.
  • You are participating out of obligation to someone else with no personal buy-in or interest in improving yourself.

Weekly Schedule:

Week 1 - Welcome/Individual and Group Identity

  • Introductions, Confidentiality Disclaimers, Purpose, and Individual Goal Setting
  • Journaling process, tips, and helpful prompts

Week 2 - Emotional IQ/Awareness and Cognitive Distortions

  • Primary and Secondary Emotions
  • Recognizing How Emotions are Experienced/Expressed
  • Developing Awareness around Cognitive Distortions

Week 3 - Relationships and Communication Skills

  • Regulating Internalized and Projected Judgment
  • Developing Communication Skills “Assertiveness” vs “Passive/Aggressive/P-A”

Week 4 - Attachment Theory and Relationships

  • Intro to Attachment Theory
  • Attachment Quiz Results
  • Moving from Insecure to Secure Attachment Styles

Week 5 - Helpful DBT Processing and Skills

  • Intro to/disclaimer for DBT - Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness
  • Identifying Emotional Distress and Dysregulated Behavioral Patterns

Week 6 - Mindfulness and Distress Tolerance Skills

  • Breathing Exercises/Meditation/Relaxation/Practicing Loving Kindness
  • Strategies for Slowing Down Reactions and Judgments

Week 7 - Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills

  • Review Identifying Emotions and Behaviors
  • Internal Monologues: “What am I feeling? What is making me feel this way? Do I want to feel this way? How else can I feel about this situation?
  • Identifying Safe Relationships for Emotional Processing

Week 8 - Living Grounded, Compassionate, and Honest Lives

  • Check-Ins and updates around Goals, Growth, and Change
  • Closing Duties

Facilitator Profile:

George Xiong currently serves as the Assistant Director of Student Counseling Services at RFUMS and is the owner of Rooted Therapy PLLC. George received a dual M.A. degrees in Mental Health Counseling and Theological Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. His current hobbies include being a foodie, board games, and playing pickleball.
