MLK Day of Service 2026

Join Joyful Readers for our MLK Day of Service 2026!

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a day of meaningful service with Joyful Readers. On Monday, January 19 we’ll gather at Frances E. Willard Elementary School in Kensington to create a brighter space for students and families in our community.

Volunteers will work together on a variety of meaningful projects to support students at Willard Elementary. You’ll help paint vibrant, literacy-themed murals that transform the school and support a family-friendly literacy carnival, where children from the community can experience the joy of reading through fun and engaging activities.

Important Details:

  • Volunteer opportunities are open to adults and teens aged 14 and older; volunteers under 18 will need to have a completed parental waiver to participate.
  • Younger children are welcome to join the fun at the literacy-themed carnival and do not need to be registered (registration form is for volunteers only).
  • All volunteers must register individually.
  • Spots will fill up fast - sign up today!

If you'd like to register a group of 5 or more, please e-mail Dave at dweinstein@joyfulreaders.org to check for availability.

Day of Service Schedule:
8:30 am - Volunteer Check-in
9:00 am - Opening Ceremony
9:15 am - Service Begins
12:00 pm - Lunch is served
1:00 pm - Service Concludes
