Is This a Business or Just an Idea?

About This Event

You have the idea. You have the drive. But most people with a great idea never act on it — and the ones who do often spend months building something the market never actually asked for. This session is for Muslim women ready to stop circling the idea and finally answer the one question that comes before everything else: is this actually a business, or just an idea?

Taught directly by Sofia Haq — a founder and venture capitalist who's sat on both sides of the table — you'll get an honest, practical framework for testing whether your idea holds up in the real world, before you spend another dollar or another late night on it.

YOU'LL WALK AWAY WITH

  • What "market" actually means: who has the problem, how many of them exist, and whether they'll actually pay for a solution
  • How to validate demand before you build: practical ways to test your idea in the real world, not just in your head
  • The most common validation mistakes: building in a vacuum, confusing interest with willingness to pay, skipping the research because you're excited
  • How to read the signals so you don't waste your time: the difference between an idea that's ready to move forward and one that needs more work first
  • Sofia's own story: how she validated the need for MWP before building it, and what she looks for as an investor evaluating real market proof

Sofia Haq is the Founder & CEO of Muslim Women Professionals (MWP), a nonprofit dedicated to the economic empowerment of Muslim women. She built MWP from an idea into a thriving national community — validating the need, structuring the vision, and growing it into a network of thousands of members across chapters nationwide.

Known as Your Hermana/Baji in VC, Sofia works on the programs side of venture capital, where she's worked directly with hundreds of founders — giving her a front-row seat to what separates an idea that's ready to become a business from one that isn't. She knows what it takes to validate and build something real, because she's seen hundreds of founders try.

A sought-after public speaker, Sofia regularly shares her story with founders and communities looking to build with both ambition and integrity. She's sat where you're sitting now, and she's worked with hundreds of founders pitching their next big idea. This session is built from both seats.
