Join us for an inspiring evening of music, mentorship, and artistic collaboration as Mexican-Israeli cellist Michal Shein leads a Masterclass with the talented young musicians of the Napa Valley Youth Symphony.
Renowned for her expressive performances and passionate teaching, Michal Shein brings a wealth of international experience as both performer and educator. In this interactive session, audience members will witness the creative process unfold as students receive one-on-one coaching, refine their technique, and explore deeper musical interpretation under Shein’s expert guidance.

ABOUT MICHAL SHEIN
Israeli-Mexican-American cellist and Teaching Artist Michal Shein focuses her work on curating cross-cultural performance projects and intensive educational initiatives. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Cellisimo, a high level cello festival for Spanish-speaking cellists with limited resources which includes intensive lessons and sessions with Michal, masterclasses with world-class faculty, transformative wellness workshops and impactful community building. The festival, now in its fifth year, has been described as " .one of the most important and unique festivals of its kind in Latin America''(- Álvaro Bitrán, cellist of the Grammy award-winning Cuarteto Latinoamericano). The festival’s 80+ alumni have come from countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Honduras, Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico and more. Guest faculty has included Lluis Claret, Santiago Cañon-Valencia, Álvaro Bitrán, Christine Lamprea, Horacio Contreras, Andrea Casarrubios, German Marcano, among other distinguished cellists.
Michal is recognized for her pedagogical style that nurtures her students with effective pedagogical methods for holistic and high musical advancement. Michal’s cello students have been winners in competitions, and have received admission to top festivals such as BUTI Tanglewood, Brevard, YOLA Festival, Greenwood, NSO, BEAM program, as well as top conservatories. Michal frequently gives masterclasses at conservatories and festivals and serves as a judge at competitions, such as the Concurso Internacional de Violoncello in Mexico. As a speaker, she has been a panel guest at the Sphinx Conference, El Sistema USA, Rockport’s Shalin Liu Speaker Series, among others.
Michal joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory in the fall 2023 for its highly anticipated Teaching Artistry Concentration. She teaches the tremendously popular Teaching Artistry Foundations course and is a student advisor. Michal is also Faculty and Cello Chair at the Boston String Academy (an award-winning El Sistema-inspired string program) and maintains a cello studio at the University of Rhode Island.
In addition to her diverse educational work, Michal maintains a career as a soloist, orchestral cellist and chamber musician. In Boston, where she resides, she appears with many orchestras and ensembles, such as the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and has collaborated with Celebrity Series of Boston. Her duo with award-winning classical guitarist Adam Levin, the Shein-Levin Duo, has released several new exciting arrangements. Their 2024-2025 season featured concerts in Paul Mattise’s Kalliroscope Gallery, The Alden Theater in DC, the University of Rhode Island, among others. Highlights from this past season also include Michal’s appearances and collaborations at the Festival Internacional de Musica de Guadajara, Rhode Island Guitar Festival, performances of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Lodger” for Cello and 4 Guitars in Albuquerque and Rhode Island, among others.
Michal received her B.A. in Music from U.C. Berkeley, where she studied with Irene Sharp and graduated with honors. Following her undergraduate studies, Michal received the Hertz Traveling Fellowship and Harriet Woolley Prize to study in Paris with Gary Hoffman and Mark Drobinsky. While in Europe, she also studied with Antonio Meneses at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena. Michal received her M.A. in Music from New England Conservatory studying with Natasha Brofsky. Michal has had the honor of participating in masterclasses with Anner Bylsma, Anssi Kartunen, Bonnie Hampton, Jean Michel Fontenaeu, Steve Doane, among others.
Michal lives in Jamaica Plain, MA. She has two kids, Noam (11) and Hadas (8).
