Centered on Black enlisted men, also known as "Buffalo Soldiers," this lecture explores the complexities of their service and how racial identity impacted their experiences in the Southwest. The 1906 Brownsville Raid exemplifies the racism these soldiers experienced, challenging myths that military service meant receiving respect and appreciation. The legacies of this event reveal the longstanding importance of this history and the role of commemoration.
