Air Pirates Radio Theater

About This Event

Air Pirates Radio Theater is a unique mix of live contemporary interactive theater and old time radio comedy. The actors perform multiple roles while reading scripts in front of microphones. The actors transform from one role to the next with such ease it is hard to tell that there are only a few actors playing the entire cast of characters. Audiences play an integral part in the performance by supplying all the sound effects, crowd noise and any additional requirements of the production. Space Cadet is the Air Pirates foray into Outer Space and the audience best be ready for the ride.

With over 100 productions to his name, Paul Ellis has directed both classical and avant-garde works, including Mad Dog Blues by Sam Shepard, A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare, Rhinoceros by Ionesco, and Love and Information by Caryl Churchill. He is also the founder of The Air Pirates Radio Theater, where he wrote and directed 16 satirical radio plays incorporating audience participation in the performances. At the core of Ellis’s work is a commitment to breaking down the traditional separation between audience and performer. Through interactive elements and site-specific performances, he cultivates an environment of trust and shared risk, pushing the boundaries of theater to inspire, challenge, and empower. Ellis’ latest endeavor is Storytelling and an upcoming season of The Air Pirates.

Paige Dillon, a theater and film artist from Monroe, NY, is dedicated to telling stories that highlight fierce femmes and explore themes that straddle the beautiful and grotesque. Whether producing original plays or directing sharp contemporary work, Paige’s voice as a storyteller is bold and clear. She’s currently developing an interactive Pinocchio adaptation for Empty Head Theater, showing her commitment to theatrical innovation and accessibility.

Raymond Apponte brings high-octane energy and a love of laughter to the stage. A professional firefighter by day and a graphic novel enthusiast by night, Raymond is the embodiment of someone who never stopped “playing pretend”—and who continues to bring joy and physicality to every performance he’s part of.

Kate Brannan is one of the original Air Pirates cast, often playing piano accompaniment in addition to voicing charactersIn addition to being a core voice actor she is a musician, and song writer for the Air Pirates troupe. She’s also a trailblazer in Hudson Valley radio as WALL’s first full-time female air personality. She has acted with Cornerstone Theater Arts and in Ten Minute Play Festivals.
