About This Event
Introducing: NYSX Meets & Mingles
A quarterly series of casual gatherings, bringing together new friends and old in a space where new connections can bloom and community bonds can get stronger. Some might be creative in vibe (like an open mic or poetry reading), some might be more focused on networking and building support systems, and some will be pure silly fun!
A Summer Park Hang: Bronx Edition
Sunday, July 26th
3-6pm
Van Cortlandt Park
(near the Tortoise and the Hare Statue)
Summer is here, and it's time for a good ol' Park Hang with New York Shakespeare Exchange! We had so much fun spending a laid-back afternoon in Central Park with y'all last year, so let's do it again, but with a new setting - Van Cortlandt Park, a jewel of the NYC parks system.
We're planning to snag a semi-shady spot on the gentle slopes between Broadway and the Van Cortlandt Parade Ground, close to the Tortoise & Hare Statue (the location of our Sonnet 120 film in The Sonnet Project!). Find the statue, and then look for us on the grass just north or south of it.
Come join us if:
- You've been missing the NYSX gang
- You want to visit a park (or borough) that might be new to you
- You want to learn more about the company, what we've got coming up, and how you might get involved
- You want to make some new friends
- You yearn for the competitive high that only lawn games can provide
- You want to pass on a favorite summer read and pick up a new one at our Book Swap Picnic Blanket
What did you say about lawn games?
We plan to have a few lawn games on hand for anyone who wants to get up and move - beach balls & frisbees for tossing around, a bocce set, and cornhole (a particular fave from last year!). If you have another favorite lawn/park game we didn't mention, feel free to bring it with you!
What did you say about a book swap?
It's summer reading season and many of us are on the hunt for our next book to get lost in. If you want to participate in our book swap, bring any book you've loved but are ready to pass along, and add them to our swap pile. Anyone who brings a book is free to choose another from the pile to take home with them - what better way to pass the time on that 1 train ride home than to start a new read?
Will there be food & drink?
NYSX will not be providing refreshments for the group, but you are welcome to bring your own! If you want to grab something close by, there are a number of bodegas and fast food options across Broadway from the park (most concentrated around the 242nd 1 train station). There is also an Aldi and a Foodtown near the 231st Street stop on the 1 train.
Accessibility info:
There are multiple points of entry into the park along Broadway, but many do involve stairs/steps. If you want up-to-date info on the best stair-free options, email Cristina at info@nysx.org.
We will have a couple of sheets/picnic blankets laid down, but we will not be bringing any chairs. If a chair is necessary to your comfort while hanging with us, please be sure to bring your own.
There is a public restroom on Broadway near 242nd St, and another on the south end of the cricket pitches/parade grounds. We are confirming the ADA-accessibility of these restrooms and will update here when we have more info.
The closest subway station to this venue is the 1 train station at 242nd Street (elevated track, stairs only). The closest elevator-accessible station is the 1 train station at 231st Street (the Bx9 bus runs up Broadway from this stop to the park). The closest MTA bus stops are on the Bx9 line - Broadway @ Van Cortlandt Manor (south of the Tortoise & Hare statue) or Broadway & 251st St (north of the statue).
Real-time information on elevator/escalator statuses in subway stations can be found here: https://www.mta.info/elevator-escalator-status
If you have any concerns or questions about your visit, please feel free to email Cristina at info@nysx.org and we will do our best to provide you with the most accurate info possible.
