Right now, too many families right here in Wyoming are facing a quiet healthcare crisis with breast cancer. We need to look out for each other now more than ever, and we need your help.

The Crisis in Our Communities

• A Devastating Statistic: Wyoming ranks 50th in the nation for breast cancer screening rates.

• Overdue for Care: More than 35% of our women are overdue for these life-saving exams.

This isn't just a clinical statistic; it is a community crisis. When a neighbor’s diagnosis is delayed because they cannot afford an ultrasound or a biopsy, the ripple effects tear through local schools, disrupt our small businesses, and fracture families.

Our Solution: The WBCI Safety Net

At the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative (WBCI), we believe that geographic isolation and financial hardship should never cost a life.

Through our partnership with the Wyoming Cancer Program, we deliver immediate, life-saving access to screening mammograms and diagnostic tests to any Wyoming resident in need; regardless of age, gender, income, or insurance coverage. This program eliminates the hidden costs of healthcare, ensuring that a hard-working resident never has to make the agonizing choice between a definitive biopsy and their grocery bill.

Annie’s Story: Overcoming the Deductible Dilemma

Meet Annie,* a small business owner and mother of three from Northwest Wyoming. During her monthly self-exam, Annie felt a lump. It’s a moment every woman dreads. While her insurance covered a routine mammogram, she was hit with a crushing high deductible for the follow-up ultrasound and biopsy; costs she simply couldn't afford out of pocket. At 39, she didn't qualify for traditional assistance, leaving her with an agonizing choice: pay the mortgage or get the diagnostic tests. For a mom with three school-aged kids, it was an impossible weight to carry.

Thankfully, Annie was connected to WBCI. Through our partnership with the Wyoming Cancer Program, navigators stepped in and immediately enrolled her in the program to cover her tests. After an anxious wait, Annie received the best news possible: the lump was benign. Because of donors like you, Annie didn’t have to gamble her health against her family’s financial survival.

Jane’s Story: The Difference Between Tragedy and a Cure

For other families, your support creates the difference between a late-stage tragedy and a cure. Consider Jane*, a 61-year-old grandmother from Southeast Wyoming who was thrilled to retire and spend more time with her family. Eight months into her retirement, a routine mammogram Jane paid for out of pocket indicated she needed further tests. Jane’s joy of retirement turned to pure terror. Jane didn't qualify for public assistance, but she also couldn't afford thousands of dollars out of pocket for diagnostic testing. Our safety net stepped in immediately to cover her exams, giving Jane a clear pathway to the urgent care she needed.

Those tests led to a devastating Stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis, but because it was caught early, Jane was able to work with an oncology social worker and begin immediate treatment. Today, two years later, Jane is completely cancer-free and back to chasing her grandkids. Without your support of WBCI, Jane might not be here today.

Since 2016, community generosity has allowed WBCI to grant over $1.27 million to statewide programs, building a resilient infrastructure for awareness and survival. Together, our cumulative impact has changed thousands of lives across Wyoming.
