Sculpture Social: Shawn Smith

Join us in celebrating Artist-in-Residence Shawn Smith's new sculpture at Josephine Sculpture Park! The interactive artwork invites us to observe the natural world with curiosity and care, and to connect with native insects as essential members of a healthy ecosystem. 

We will begin in the Josephine Sculpture Park amphitheatre for an interdisciplinary panel with artist Shawn Smith, JSP Founding Director & Chief Curator Melanie VanHouten, Kentucky State University ecologist Kristin Conrad, and the Kentucky Resources Council.

We'll end the night at Shawn's sculpture and to learn more about the artists' process and residency experience.

Refreshments will be provided. Please register so we know how many folks to expect. We will gather rain or shine.

Shawn Smith received his BFA in Printmaking from Washington University and his MFA in Sculpture from the California College of the Arts. He has been commissioned to create public artworks in San Francisco, New York City, Fort Worth, Austin, and at the US Embassy in Niamey, Niger. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Explora Science Museum in Albuquerque, NM, the Nash Sculpture Center in Dallas and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Josephine Sculpture Park's Immersive Artist-in-Residence program provides artists a career-boosting opportunity to make new outdoor work on a large-scale, with the physical space and technical and financial support to succeed. JSP is free and open daily from dawn to dusk and hosts over 70 artworks across 2 miles of trails!
