About This Event
A two-part workshop series providing trail safety education and environmental protection training for trail volunteers and trail users. You can choose to attend one or both parts of the day, depending on your interests! Make sure to dress for the weather, as we will be out on the trails, rain or shine!
Part 1: Volunteer Trail Steward Training (10am-12pm)
This is designed for trail volunteers and emerging trail leaders. Participants will receive instruction in trail safety fundamentals, identifying and reporting hazards, emergency awareness and response protocols, sustainable trail maintenance principles, and effective communication with trail users. The workshop emphasizes accessibility, sustainability, and stewardship, equipping volunteers to serve as frontline ambassadors for safe and responsible trail use. Participants completing the training will be recognized as Certified Trail Stewards.
Part 2: Trail User Safety (12pm-1:30pm)
This is designed for the general public, including hikers, families, students, and new outdoor recreationists. Through a guided, educational hike, participants will learn safe trail navigation, situational awareness, weather and seasonal safety considerations, wildlife encounters, shared-use trail etiquette, and Leave No Trace principles. Real-time demonstrations on the trail will reinforce environmental protection and responsible recreation behaviors.
- Location: William E. Chatlos Environmental Education Center
- Cost: Free
If you find you are unable to attend after registering, please contact us so we can ensure our hiker list is accurate.
While many of our programs and hikes are offered free of charge, Lacawac Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations to make this programming possible. If you are able, please consider adding even a small donation when you register to help support our environmental education efforts.
Rescheduling and Cancellation Policy:
- Lacawac reserves the right to reschedule, postpone, or cancel a program due to low registration (fewer than 10 attendees), weather conditions, or other circumstances beyond our control. Participants will be notified by email as soon as possible if changes are necessary.
- If Lacawac cancels a paid program, participants will receive a full refund of their registration fee. If Lacawac reschedules or postpones a paid program, tickets will automatically be honored for the new date. If a ticket holder cannot attend the rescheduled date, they may choose to donate their registration fee to support Lacawac’s nonprofit mission, or receive a credit toward a future Lacawac program.
- As a nonprofit organization, Lacawac incurs credit card processing fees for both registrations and refunds, which reduces funds available for programs. Thank you for understanding and for supporting our mission.
- No action is needed if you can attend on the new date. We encourage participants to check their email and Lacawac’s website and social media channels for updates, especially as weather conditions may impact programs.
