About This Event
Join JSP Artist-in-Residence Shawn Smith to build your own insect hotel using natural materials and reclaimed wood. Learn all about native bees with Kentucky State University ecologist Kristin Conrad. This workshop will invite us to observe the natural world with curiosity, and to see native insects as essential members of a healthy ecosystem.
Together, we will:
- Get hands-on with field scopes, bee specimens and printed resources to learn about Kentucky native bees and pollinators.
- Explore what makes effective insect habitat and why habitat diversity matters.
- Select and arrange natural materials to create varied insect nesting and overwintering habitats.
- Experience thoughtful, durable, sustainable design of a simple building project.
- Leave with an insect hotel you can install at home (mounting supplies not included).
This workshop is a rain or shine in the JSP event barn!
Shawn Smith received his BFA in Printmaking from Washington University and his MFA in Sculpture from the California College of the Arts. He has been commissioned to create public artworks in San Francisco, New York City, Fort Worth, Austin, and at the US Embassy in Niamey, Niger. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of the Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Explora Science Museum in Albuquerque, NM, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Josephine Sculpture Park's Immersive Artist-in-Residence program provides artists a career-boosting opportunity to make new outdoor work on a large-scale, with the physical space and technical and financial support to succeed. JSP is free and open daily from dawn to dusk and hosts over 70 artworks across 3 miles of trails!
All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
