Roller Derby Skate Skills Camp Important Info:
1. What should I wear and bring?
A - Snug workout clothes (we practice in a community center so be mindful of the family atmosphere!)
- A spill-proof water bottle
- Band-aids or moleskin for your feet
- Skate wheels appropriate for a slick gym floor
- Full roller derby gear (see above list)
2. What should I do before Skills Camp?
A - Review our Code of Conduct information.
- Watch YouTube videos of roller skating tips or roller derby!
- Get a friend (or several) to come with you!
3. I haven't skated in a long time. Should I attend Skills Camp?
A - We do require that you can stay upright while skating forward. Other than that, feel free to join us for Skills Camp! There's no commitment required to join the league when you attend our Boot Camp. It's just to have fun, get a workout, work on skate skills, meet Roller Rioters, and make new friends!
4. Am I too old/fat/skinny/out-of-shape/short/tall to play roller derby?
A - Roller derby is for EVERYONE. If you feel uncertain, take a look at our team values and/or contact a current skater first – we want you to be successful and feel awesome!
5. Do I have to attend every session?
A - No, but if you are interested in trying out for RRR it's important to attend each night so that we can see how dedicated you are and assess that your overall skill level is a match for our training committee by the end of Skills Camp.
6. Do I have to have skates or other gear to attend Skills Camp?
A - Yes. We are a small team and cannot store a gear library--however, there might be gear around if you are having trouble spending money on a hobby you aren't sure you love. We know people!
7. Can I use in-line skates?
A - We are teaching skills for quad skates only.
8. I want to buy skates and gear because I don't own any or want to upgrade. Where can I get advice?
A - There are a lot of resources online and in the Seattle area. There are skate shops in North Seattle, Renton, and Tacoma. There are groups on Facebook such as Roller Derby Recyclables and PNW Used Derby Gear. You can also ask a member of RRR if they could ask around for you. Start by making a post on the Skills Camp Facebook event.
9. Do I have to attend Skills Camp to try out for the league?
A - We STRONGLY prefer for you to attend Skills Camp if you want to join Rainier Roller Riot. We also encourage 100% attendance during Skills Camp and while you are starting out Well, we encourage 100% attendance ALWAYS.
10. Is health insurance required to attend Skills Camp or to join the league later?
A - No; however, you should understand the full risks of learning on roller skates. RRR will require you to sign a waiver saying you are aware of the risks of roller skating and derby and you take full responsibility for your injuries. IF YOU ARE INJURED, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MEDICAL EXPENSES AND LOST WAGES.
11. I'm an experienced skater who plans to try out for the league. Should I attend Skills Camp?
A - Yes! We want to see you demonstrate that you're a team player, especially when it involves skating with people who aren't as skilled as you are. We strive to create an environment where people can learn from falling and be lifted up by their teammates AND fellow Skills Campers.
We are a team of intersectional accomplices. We do not tolerate right-wing politics, ableism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, body-shaming, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, sexism, cultural appropriation, or slurs/abuse/harassment of any kind. When you apply to join RRR, you will be required to sign our Anti-Harassment Policy and Code of Conduct. If this sounds great to you, what are you waiting for?? Sign up now!
