About This Event

Enjoy this dark sky documentary lineup at 5 PM and 8 PM:

In Their Eyes (3 min) From In Their Eyes YouTube page: The night sky has been lost to our children because of light pollution, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The stars that guided the explorers still exist, and you can actually see them in northern Maine.

Losing the Dark (7 min) From Losing the Dark YouTube page: Starry skies are a vanishing treasure because light pollution is washing away our view of the cosmos. It not only threatens astronomy, it disrupts wildlife and affects human health. The yellow glows over cities and towns — seen so clearly from space — are a testament to the billions spent in wasted energy from lighting up the sky.

Defending the Dark* (35 min) From the Defending the Dark YouTube page: This dark sky film educates viewers on why it is crucial to preserve dark sky areas, emphasizing the unique dark sky environment of the north Maine woods. *awaiting permission

Saving the Dark (56 min) From the Saving the Dark YouTube page: 80% of the world’s population live under light-polluted skies. What do we lose when we lose sight of the stars? Excessive and improper lighting robs us of our night skies, disrupts our sleep patterns, and endangers nocturnal habitats. The current advances in LED technology have enabled several cities to safely light their streets and save energy without disrupting the nighttime environment.

This event is sponsored by the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust and Rangeley Friends of the Arts.
