About This Event
Join us for a conversation with director Casondra Sobieralski about her innovative ecological filmmaking process, followed by a screening of Rasos with Wildflowers, a stunning experimental film exploring Lithuania's cultural heritage through nature. The film has already won 2 awards in May and June including Best Documentary Short from San Diego Film Awards, and Best Experimental Film from the LA Indie Film Channel Film Festival.
Wednesday Schedule
5:00pm - 6:00pm | Community Cook
6:00pm - 7:30pm | Potluck and Hang
7:30pm - 8:00pm | Discussion about the Film Production
*8:00pm - 8:20pm | Film Screening
8:20pm - 8:30pm | Q and A with the Filmmaker
"Rasos with Wildflowers" uses a combination of digital video and audio material from traditional mid-summer festivals and digitized analog (35 mm) hand-processed film to document Lithuania's intangible cultural heritage, reclaimed in modern times. In so doing, the piece weaves together past, present, and potentially the future. The phytogram film technique used herein involves using a mixture of vitamin C, washing soda, and polyphenols from Lithuanian wildflowers as a film developer, then soaking the film in a saltwater bath as a photo fixer for approximately 36-hours. This more ecologically sound film developing method pays homage to the visceral reverence for Nature that is so much a part of Lithuanian culture. It also lends a posthumanist lens to the heritage by giving voice to the flowers, via their chemical signatures, as active agents in the cultural festivals of the nation.
Wednesday Evenings 5 to 8ish
Come join us for REAP Climate Center’s weekly Fireside Potluck. Join our community of climate-minded friends and folks in an evening of communal cooking, eating, and conversation. Take the opportunity to explore REAP’s beautiful Alameda campus. Some food will be provided, but please consider ‘potlucking’ if you can.
Have an event idea? We love community sourced ideas! Want to lead a workshop? Know a band who'd like to play here? A movie you love? A discussion topic you want to talk about? Fill out this form!
