September is National Recovery Month

September marks National Recovery Month, in which we recognize and celebrate the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities like our own who make recovery in all its forms possible.

At the Alano Club, we help people recover 365 days a year. We do this through a variety of low-barrier, cost-free services and programs so everyone can find an inclusive community and specialized resources to build their own pathway to recovery.

We believe that connection is the opposite of addiction, and your support and generosity have allowed us to build numerous points of connection for anyone in or seeking recovery. From mutual aid meetings and mindfulness practices to peer mentoring and overdose prevention trainings, our cost-free programs fill a critical care gap that community members in addiction struggle with year-round.

First introduced in 2019, The Recovery Gym (TRG) serves 21,000 people annually between our Multnomah and Washington county locations. As the PNW’s first dedicated fitness center for adults and adolescents in substance use recovery, TRG coaches--all of whom are in recovery--teach participants both the inner and outer strength long-term recovery requires. Movement-based routines paired with trauma-informed coaching and community-centered classes are both tools and connection points that help people in recovery like Jerilyn:

“Speaking from personal experience, active addiction caused me to isolate myself from my family, friends and loved ones. The Recovery Gym staff and fellow athletes showed me extreme kindness and understanding, they were warm, welcoming and very supportive. As time went on, I saw much improvement in other areas of my life. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The physical aspect is great, but the others require more diligence. They are the ones that create real change.”

- Jerilyn, TRG member and coach

Your support really matters—because Portland needs recovery,

and we need you!

Your donation could save a life.

Oregon has the highest rate of adult and adolescent substance use in the nation and remains 50th — last — in the country in availability of treatment and resources for those struggling with substance use disorder.

Thus far in 2025, Alano PeerConnect has served nearly 1,000 people in or seeking recovery. PeerConnect is an especially impactful resource for those on the path to recovery because it centers lived experience, where community members have the chance to work one-on-one with someone they can directly relate to. By creating spaces for belonging and affinity, our PeerConnect mentors are helping those in need remember they are not alone. This is just one of the ways Alano participants can find self-confidence and relevant resources to support their recovery today—and far into the future.

All of this is made possible by your continued support.

We're on a mission to eliminate barriers to life-saving recovery resources for our neighbors in need.

Help us get there. Donate today.

More people need our services than ever before, and there are even fewer resources available for organizations like ours than there were last year or the year before.
