About This Event
Overview
Every year CCE, in partnership with Street Law at Georgetown Law, recruits a team of local judges and attorneys to help inform high school students about jury service through the School Jury Education Program (SJEP). Students learn the importance of jury duty, watch an engaging trial video, and then participate in a mock deliberation with their classmates as fellow “jurors.” Students leave the program with a better understanding and appreciation of the importance of jury service in our democracy, as well as increased enthusiasm for serving as a juror. This program also offers students opportunities to find mentors and establish long-term relationships with leaders in the legal profession.
The Volunteer Commitment
CCE is looking for lawyers and judges to participate in the SJEP program this year. The program will take place from Monday, December 7 through Friday, December 18, 2026. Volunteering includes reviewing the curriculum materials provided, attending an online (Zoom) orientation session scheduled for Wednesday, December 2 at 12 PM and joining at least one class to lead the program. The classes last from 60 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the day (this does not include travel to and from each school). Other than reviewing the materials and attending the orientation session, volunteers do not need to complete any other prep.
During the classroom session, you will use the curriculum materials provided to walk through the mock trial with the students, show a video as a part of that trial process, and guide the students through deliberation and discussion about the trial and what it means to serve on a jury.
Logistics
The SJEP program will take place from December 7 through 18, 2026. There are currently 10 schools participating in the program, with two class sessions each; the schools are listed alphabetically on the registration form. Please sign up for as many classes as you are available for. We need up to two judges and two attorneys for each class. There are 3 slots available for each class session, so the third slot will serve as a standby/backup for that class.
Please note that in order to balance the number of volunteers in each class, CCE staff will review sign-ups and adjust the schedule accordingly. Volunteers may not be asked to attend every class they indicated availability for, but will be notified of their final schedule ASAP.
Once volunteers have finished signing up, they will receive an email confirming the slots they volunteered for. Once the schedule has been finalized, all volunteers will be notified. Volunteers will also be sent a calendar hold for the required orientation session.
If you have any questions, or your schedule changes after you sign up, please email Natalie Walker at nwalker@websterfredricksonwalker.com.
