About This Class
Hello, CNC: Getting to Know the CoLab
CNC Router
Instructor: Cameron "Cam" Behning
Class Description:
We’ll teach the basics of CNC operation, basic file setup using the CoLab CNC Setup Tool, and machine safety and operation. Students will get hands-on practice of running their files, will end the class making their own Wooden Initial and will walk away authorized to operate the CoLab CNC while supervised. Students are not required to have previous CNC experience, but having CAD experience is suggested.
Course Schedule:
CNC Overview (30 Minutes): We’ll begin by covering the basics of what a CNC is, what are the basic terms to know, and what kinds of projects are a good or bad fit for using a CNC router.
CoLab CNC Setup Tool and CAM (15 Minutes): We will introduce students to the concept of CAM setup, and walk through the CoLab CNC Setup Tool Website, and discuss other software that students can use in the future for CAM.
CNC Operation and Safety (30 minutes): We will transition to the Woodshed, where we will go over the operations and safety procedures for our CNC Router.
Project CAM and Cutting (75 minutes): Students will work to set up their CAM file for the DXF shape. As students finish their CAM, the instructor will check their file, then guide them to set up and operate the CNC under supervision.
Students should bring:
Students should bring a laptop or computer to access the CNC Setup Tool. CoLab will have computers to use if a student cannot bring their own. Students are also encouraged to bring their own safety glasses and hearing protection, though CoLab can provide for those who don’t.
Prerequisites:
Ideally, students should be familiar with CAD software and be capable of drafting and exporting a DXF file. Students who do not yet have this skill will be guided to use pre-vetted dxf files.
Cost:
Each student is asked to contribute $30.00 for this class.
Class Attendance:
Space and availablity in our classes are extremely limited so we ask that attendees please respect our instructors and others in the community:
- Please show up promptly at the start of the class.
- We understand that things happen but out of repect for others and our instructors:
- Those arriving more than 20 minutes late to a class may not be allowed entry. There are no refunds in this case.
- Please let us know if you are unable to attend ASAP so we can open your spot to someone else wanting to attend the class. Refund policy is listed below.
Refund policy:
We purchase materials in advance of each of our classes, and thus, we've updated our refund policy as follows, see below.
You can choose to have your refund returned to your original payment method, or applied to an QGiv credit that you can use for a reiteration of this class or another class entirely:
- Cancellation up to 7 days before the event: 100% refund, excluding QGiv fees.
- Cancellation between 3 and 7 days before the event: 50% refund, excluding QGiv fees.
- Less than 3 days before the event: 0% refund.
No Show Policy:
CoLab offers classes at little to no cost to the community. Space is extremely limited and demand is high. If you register for this class, please make absolutely sure you can attend otherwise you will be taking a valuable spot from someone else and de-valuing our instructor's time (who donate their time to CoLab!). Because of this, we must insist that if you sign up and find that you can not make it, you must communicate that to us ASAP so we can fill your spot with someone else that can make it. Simply email us at info@sdcolab.org.
We get it, life happens but please consider others in these situations. Repeated violators will be asked to seek art instruction elsewhere.
