About This Class
Demystifying 3D Printing
Instructor: Marcus Wanner
Class Description
Want to print in three dimensions? For paper printing (boring old 2D), we just take a .doc or PDF and hit the print button. But what does this process look like for 3D “documents”?
This class covers the digital-model to physical-object phase of the 3D printing fabrication workflow. Starting with 3D model files, we’ll use a slicer program to convert to machine code files…and then we’ll print them! Most of our time will be spent doing hands-on work with the slicers and printers, and while we watch them go, we’ll have plenty of time for Q&A and slides with fun facts+additional info.
Areas of focus:
-
Understanding common terms and file types
-
Identifying 3D model files suitable for filament-based printing
-
Slicing models into printer-specific gcode files
-
Loading filament and priming nozzle
-
Ensuring bed leveling and adhesion
-
Basic hardware troubleshooting as necessary
Students should bring:
CoLab themed demo model files will be provided, but students are welcome to bring an STL, STEP, or similar 3D model file of a small item for printing. Due to the time constraints of the class and relatively slow speed of filament-based printing, larger models will need to be scaled down to pocket size.
Students should prepare by watching this 30 minute video,
The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to 3D Printing (There are many Intro to 3D Printing videos available on YouTube - you are welcome to watch others as well.)
Prerequisites:
None
Cost:
Each student is asked to contribute $15.00 for this class.
Class Attendance:
Space and availablity in our classes are extremely limited so we ask that attendees please respect our instructors and others in the community:
- Please show up promptly at the start of the class.
- We understand that things happen but out of repect for others and our instructors:
- Those arriving more than 20 minutes late to a class may not be allowed entry. There are no refunds in this case.
- Please let us know if you are unable to attend ASAP so we can open your spot to someone else wanting to attend the class. Refund policy is listed below.
Refund policy:
We purchase materials in advance of each of our classes, and thus, we've updated our refund policy as follows, see below.
You can choose to have your refund returned to your original payment method, or applied to an QGiv credit that you can use for a reiteration of this class or another class entirely:
- Cancellation up to 7 days before the event: 100% refund, excluding QGiv fees.
- Cancellation between 3 and 7 days before the event: 50% refund, excluding QGiv fees.
- Less than 3 days before the event: 0% refund.
No Show Policy:
CoLab offers classes at little to no cost to the community. Space is extremely limited and demand is high. If you register for this class, please make absolutely sure you can attend otherwise you will be taking a valuable spot from someone else and de-valuing our instructor's time (who donate their time to CoLab!). Because of this, we must insist that if you sign up and find that you can not make it, you must communicate that to us ASAP so we can fill your spot with someone else that can make it. Simply email us at info@sdcolab.org.
We get it, life happens but please consider others in these situations. Repeated violators will be asked to seek art instruction elsewhere.
About Marcus Wanner:
Marcus is an Escondido-based computer engineer with a passion for mixing form and function to create art that is both aesthetically and practically interesting. They have about a decade of experience building and operating hobbyist-grade 3D printers.
