About This Class

Stitch n Bitch

Instructors: Mikaela and Sasha

This event will be casual and social, with a focus on furthering personal sewing projects while building community and making friends. Participants are encouraged to bring a small project to work on or spend their time practicing stitch skills on provided scrap fabric.

Course Schedule:

We'll spend the first 20-30 minutes getting settled at our machines, making introductions, and chatting about our respective projects. The remainder of the course will be open use/practice time, with instructors available to answer questions and provide support.

Skills Instilled:
This event is meant to provide space for participants to develop their own sewing skills, at their own pace, while in the company of other sewing hobbyists.

Students should bring:
A personal project to work on or skills they’d like to practice.

Prerequisites:
Basic familiarity with machine sewing.

Cost:
Each student is asked to contribute $10.00 for the materials.

Machines, sewing accessories, and scrap fabric will be provided. No additional materials are required, but students are welcome to bring a small project to work on.

Class Attendance:

Space and availablity in our classes are extremely limited so we ask that attendees please respect our instructors and others in the community:

  • Please show up promptly at the start of the class.
  • We understand that things happen but out of repect for others and our instructors:
    • Those arriving more than 20 minutes late to a class may not be allowed entry. There are no refunds in this case.
    • Please let us know if you are unable to attend ASAP so we can open your spot to someone else wanting to attend the class. Refund policy is listed below.

Refund policy:

We purchase materials in advance of each of our classes, and thus, we've updated our refund policy as follows, see below.

You can choose to have your refund returned to your original payment method, or applied to an QGiv credit that you can use for a reiteration of this class or another class entirely:

  • Cancellation up to 7 days before the event: 100% refund, excluding QGiv fees.
  • Cancellation between 3 and 7 days before the event: 50% refund, excluding QGiv fees.
  • Less than 3 days before the event: 0% refund.

No Show Policy:

CoLab offers classes at little to no cost to the community. Space is extremely limited and demand is high. If you register for this class, please make absolutely sure you can attend otherwise you will be taking a valuable spot from someone else and de-valuing our instructor's time (who donate their time to CoLab!). Because of this, we must insist that if you sign up and find that you can not make it, you must communicate that to us ASAP so we can fill your spot with someone else that can make it. Simply email us at info@sdcolab.org

We get it, life happens but please consider others in these situations. Repeated violators will be asked to seek art instruction elsewhere.

About Mikaela (she/her)

Mikaela is a costume and experimental fashion designer and artist whose work combines traditional techniques and materials with digital fabrication technology and lighting. She enjoys creating clothing and accessories for time traveling cyborg superheroes and lucid dreamers, and teaching creative problem solving to anyone who will listen. Mikaela has a bachelor's degree in Visual Art from Brown University and an associate's degree in Fashion Design from The Fashion Institute of Technology, and currently works as an Operations Manager for the Autodesk Technology Centers.

About Sasha (he/him)

Sasha (he/him) is a professional researcher and educator associated with the electronics and sewing departments at CoLab. Sasha loves the design and build process in all materials; if he is aware of a fabrication technique, he has probably tried it or wants to try it. Sasha also enjoys making and observing art, and at present his primary art practice is figure drawing.
