Hidden Histories & Tiled Stairways: Excelsior Sunday Streets Walk

Donate

About This Event

Warm up for the season finale of Sunday Streets SF 2026 with a 3-mile walk through two neighborhoods rich in history, character, and stewardship: Cayuga Terrace and the Excelsior. We begin at Cayuga Playground, full of fanciful wooden carvings by longtime park gardener Demetrio Braceros. At the Geneva Car Barn & Powerhouse, we’ll learn about this historic building – home of SF’s first electric railway – and its reincarnation as a cultural and community center. After a look at the deeply rooted community legacy of Balboa Park, we head up into the heart of the Excelsior to the Athens-Avalon Greenspace, one of SF’s first tiled stairway gardens. We'll catch neighborhood views from the La Grande Water Tower before heading to Don Chuy’s Mexi-Mercado, where you’ll find one of the city’s best burritos at the back of a corner store. We then head to Mission Street for Excelsior Sunday Streets, a mile-long block party running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Since 2008, Livable City’s Sunday Streets have transformed neighborhood streets into car-free community spaces, bringing people together for a day of connection, music, movement, and fun.

Special guests: Along the way, we'll meet community stewards who are transforming overlooked urban spaces into magnets for neighborhood and cultural celebration:

  • Christian Ard of the Friends of the Geneva Office Building and Powerhouse
  • Paul Hagen of the Friends of Balboa Park
  • Pam Axelson of the Athens-Avalon Green Space

Co-hosted by SF Crosstown Trails and Livable City

Offered through Walktober SF 2026
