Mushroom Cultivation Workshop 2026

Registration ends Friday, 04/17/2026 11:59pm EDT

About This Event

Interested in growing your own mushrooms? Join us at Allegheny RiverTrail Park for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to cultivate shiitake mushrooms on hardwood logs.

This two-hour workshop will cover the fundamentals of backyard log-grown mushroom cultivation. While our focus will be on shiitake, the techniques you learn can be applied to a variety of other mushroom species.

Tony Miga, who has been cultivating log-grown shiitake for more than 10 years, will lead the session. He’ll walk you through:

  • Selecting and sourcing appropriate hardwood logs

  • Choosing and purchasing supplies

  • Proper inoculation techniques

  • Ongoing care and maintenance for reliable harvests

Each participant will be provided their own log to inoculate during the workshop, which they can take home to begin growing mushrooms.

Registration includes:

  • A 2-hour experiential workshop

  • All required materials and supplies

  • One inoculated log to take home

No prior experience is necessary.

What to Wear:
Please dress for hands-on work. You may be using small power tools, so avoid loose-fitting clothing. Boots or closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.
