Empowering Children through a Wholeness Approach to Learning
Sunday, Sept. 27, 9am-5pm,
Strawtown Studio, Garnerville, NY
For educators, teaching artists, community leaders, parents, and anyone who wants to bring a deep ecology perspective and creative nature connection to their youth and communities.
In today’s fragmented and polarized world, how do we raise children to feel a sense of health, wholeness, and belonging? Join us for this Strawtown facilitator workshop and explore ways to see learning through a whole-systems lens.
Based on 25 years of experience we have developed ways of teaching through building awareness of inter-relationships which provides youth with big picture seeing and thinking, helps to shape their worldview, and their ability to interpret the world around them - seeing what is needed and thoughtfully responding, individually and collectively.
When combined with nature, art and science, children begin to experience the interconnectedness of all life and their place within it. For instance the river is not just the strip of water flowing down the valley, it includes the land, the cities, and people around the river, whose behaviors past and present impact the river. Learning about the governing principles of nature, and the reciprocity inherent in life systems provides endless inspiration for growing into the world. As we imagine a better future, this brings meaningful wholeness and purpose to how we learn and live.
You will come away with practices and activities that you can bring directly into your own life, work and teachings. You will learn to weave direct nature experience, art-making, and scientific inquiry into teaching in a way that feels whole, alive, and deeply personal for both the facilitator, as well as the young people and communities you support.

* This workshop is paired with "DEEP ECOLOGY WORKSHOP WITH JOHN SEED"
Sept. 26th, 8:30am - 7:30pm
Unitarian Universalist Church, Pomona, NY
Join us with renowned deep ecology activist and author John Seed joining live from Australia, and Erika Aligno, Director of the Institute for Deep Ecology, for an immersive workshop exploring our relationship with the living world. Co-Facilitated by Laurie Seeman and Alan Levin.
Seed's work draws on the pioneering ecological philosophy of Joanna Macy and Thomas Berry, whose ideas helped shape the deep ecology movement. This is a rare and powerful opportunity to engage with some of the most thoughtful voices in ecological philosophy and practice. Space is limited to 30 seats, reserve your spot today.
Deep Ecology is the practical philosophy of moving beyond intellectually knowing we're part of nature, to actually feeling it — dissolving the illusion of separation between ourselves and the living world. Deepen your connection with the natural world - join us for one or both workshops!
