Description:
"The Circle of Sound: Creative Practices for Reclaiming Your Voice" is designed for individuals seeking to reconnect with their voices, their bodies, and their creative potential. A central component is the creation of a safe "Circle of Sound," where participants are invited to share, listen, and create collectively, fostering connection, empathy, and community. The workshop includes guided vocal exercises and body awareness practices, supported by techniques from Bel Canto and Estill Voice, helping participants understand and gain control of their voices and bodies while expressing themselves authentically. The workshop concludes with a small performance led by me within the circle.
All summer workshops will have a component of Circle, and participants with or without Circle experience are welcome.
Diana is a Mexican-born and raised singer, songwriter, and interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. My artistic path began when it was not safe to say a word at my family home. Writing became my ally, and later, the drums. I was the drummer of a garage band where I discovered I wanted to write songs. Little did I know I was a soprano who would end up working professionally with The Mexican Opera House, eventually abandoning my singer-songwriter dream due to the strict demands of classical music and my own disbelief in my creative voice. Not fitting into the opera world, I moved to New York in search of change.
New York brought me back to songwriting through harsh lessons and challenges I couldn’t escape. Yet painful and beautiful synchronicities guided me to embrace my artistic identity. My first EP, "Shine" (2019), marked the beginning of my journey as an artist committed to amplifying the voices of communities affected by adversity and trauma.
About my education: I never could finish my bachelor’s in music, but I attended “Conservatorio de las Rosas” and the “Escuela Superior de Música” in Mexico for almost four years. Some of my career highlights include performing with The Mexican Opera House at "Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes" as a first soprano in the choir, occasionally performing character roles, receiving a two-year grant from the "International Society of Mexican Artistic Values" (SIVAM), and reaching the finals of the most prestigious Mexican National Singing Contest, "Carlo Morelli". In New York, I expanded my practice to include Latin American folk traditions before fully embracing my songwriting and interdisciplinary work. I have performed and held teaching artist residencies with The Society of Educational Arts, Teatro SEA, Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders, and The Martina Arroyo Foundation.
In 2021, I received the NYFA City Artist Corps Grant, which I used to write, produce, and perform "A Mexican Free Holy!", my interdisciplinary show exploring the resilience of a female BIPOC immigrant. In 2024, I debuted with the New York Andalus Ensemble, singing Sephardic music in Arabic, Hebrew, and Ladino at the Library of Congress, and wrote the article "Songs of Hope" for the Healing and CPTSD community reflecting on trauma, resilience, and creative musical practice. In 2025, I was selected for NYFA’s Artist as Entrepreneur Program.
Volunteering as a circle keeper for Hidden Water has become central to the practice I am developing: creating musical performative circles where survivors of trauma, CSA, immigrants, and people who need support can honor their voices, share their stories, and find validation and community through creative expression. I am currently completing certification in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/tapping) with the Center of EFT Studies.
Understanding the depths of division and despair, the musical performative circles I am developing are a response to amplifying stigmatized and silenced voices by demonstrating the transformative power of community, storytelling, and music
